Why Texas Therapist

Built for Texas. Built like a directory, not a marketplace.

Texas-only roster

Every clinician holds an active Texas license. National platforms route you to whichever provider is available; we route you to someone allowed to treat you here.

No subscription

You're not signing up for a $70–$100/week membership. You contact the clinician and pay their normal session rate — often through your insurance.

Real bios, verbatim

We publish each therapist's own words. No AI rewrites, no marketing polish — just what they wrote about how they work.

NPI-verified

Every license is cross-checked against the federal NPPES registry. You'll see the verification badge on every profile.

Local context

Each of the 254 counties and 275 cities has its own guide — LMHA, crisis line, NAMI affiliate, FQHCs, and the clinicians who serve it.

In English and Spanish

Filter by language. Find bilingual clinicians. Our site is also available en español.

Frequently asked

How much does therapy cost?
Each clinician sets their own rates. Many accept Texas insurance plans (Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Superior HealthPlan, Medicaid STAR). Self-pay rates typically range $90–$200 per 50-minute session.
Do you take my insurance?
Filter by plan on the directory. We list which carriers each clinician is paneled with, including major Texas Medicaid managed care plans (Superior, Molina, Aetna Better Health, Amerigroup) and most commercial PPOs.
Can I see someone this week?
Many of our clinicians have same-week openings for telehealth. Availability is shown on each clinician's own scheduling page. If you need help fast, call (214) 307-4260 — a real person will help match you.
Is this an app or a subscription?
Neither. Texas Therapist is a directory. You contact and pay the clinician directly through their practice — exactly like an in-office referral. We don't take a platform fee.
Are these therapists licensed in Texas?
Yes. Every clinician's Texas license and NPI is verified against the federal NPPES registry before publication, and re-checked on a rolling basis.
What types of clinicians are listed?
Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC), Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW), Licensed Marriage & Family Therapists (LMFT), psychologists (PhD/PsyD), and psychiatric providers (MD, DO, PMHNP). Filter by credential to narrow.
Do you see children or teens?
Our telehealth clinicians see clients ages 13 and up. For teens 13–17, a parent or legal guardian must set up care and provide consent. For children under 13, please reach out to a local in-person child specialist or your pediatrician for a referral.
Can I switch therapists if it's not the right fit?
Absolutely — and you should. The therapist-client fit is the single biggest predictor of progress. If it doesn't click after 1-2 sessions, come back and try another.
Will my employer or insurance see my therapy notes?
No. Therapy records are protected under HIPAA. Diagnoses billed to insurance go into your medical record but are not visible to your employer.
Can a Texas therapist see me if I'm temporarily out of state?
Most cannot — therapists are generally licensed to practice in the state where you are physically located during the session. If you'll be traveling, let your therapist know and ask about reciprocity (PSYPACT, Counseling Compact).
How long does therapy take to work?
Many people feel some relief in the first 4-6 sessions. Meaningful change for most concerns takes 8-20 weekly sessions. Complex trauma or long-standing patterns may take longer.

When Texas Therapist is not the right fit

  • — If you are in an immediate crisis, please call or text 988 or go to the nearest emergency room.
  • — If you are under 13, our clinicians can't see you via telehealth. Teens ages 13–17 need a parent or legal guardian to set up care and provide consent.
  • — If you were ordered to attend therapy by a court, your provider may need to be on an approved list — check the order first.
  • — If you don't have a stable internet connection, telehealth won't work well.
